I Will Never Love Anything More than the 'Charade' (1963) Opening Titles
a case for comedy and satire right now
Fade In: A Winter Landscape in the Mountains. Skiers go down the mountain in the distance, as the camera pans to the deck of the resort. The camera comes to rest on an elegant woman in sunglasses and winter furs eating a salad. The camera continues panning to show the rest of the chic guests at the restaurant.
THEN - From behind a yellow umbrella an arm lowers, holding a gun. It’s aimed at the chic women who is still enjoying her salad! The camera cuts back and forth between the gun and the woman multiple times. The gloved hand presses the trigger!
It’s a water gun. The woman takes and eyeful to the face, and now dripping wet, she removes her sunglasses. The ‘gunman’ is revealed to be an eight year old boy. “Don’t tell me, you didn’t know it was loaded.”
If you’ve never seen Charade with Audrey Hepburn. Go do it right now.
